Your Employer Is on the Green-Card Suspension List. What Happens to Your Career Plan?

By Anees K. M. · 9 October 2026 · 3-minute read

Green-card uncertainty: a professional considers paths towards an office and a family home.

You finish work. Your project is progressing. Your manager is discussing next quarter.

Then a headline appears: your employer faces restrictions on green-card sponsorship.

Suddenly, you are thinking about your family, your house purchase and your future.

Before making a decision, separate three things: your job, your immigration process and your long-term plans.

What has changed?

On 8 October 2026, US officials announced PERM programme suspensions involving eight technology employers, including Microsoft, Adobe and TCS. Read the announcement coverage.

PERM is a labour-certification step in certain employer-sponsored immigration routes. The announcement concerns that process; it does not itself suspend the H-1B programme. Your application stage and circumstances matter. US government process overview · PERM and H-1B distinction.

A small corporate impact can be a major personal impact

TCS said it expected no material impact on its workforce strategy or client engagements. Reuters, 9 October 2026.

That answers a business question. It cannot answer every employee’s life question.

A company measures disruption through operations and revenue. A professional may measure it through residency, family stability and years of planning.

“Limited business impact” does not necessarily mean “limited personal impact.”

Three questions before your next move

Ask your employer’s immigration team and qualified counsel:

  1. Where exactly is my application in the process?
  2. Which deadlines require action in my case?
  3. What would changing employers mean for my position?

Get individual answers before making decisions about resignation, travel or filings.

Then strengthen what travels with you: measurable achievements, transferable skills and professional relationships beyond your current team. This is preparation, not an instruction to leave.

What leaders owe their teams

For leaders, the responsibility is clear: give employees a named contact, access to individual guidance and a date for the next update. Reassurance needs something concrete behind it.

In business, we examine dependence on one customer or distributor. Our career plans deserve the same attention—with greater care, because families are involved.

What assumption about your career would you want to verify before building more of your life around it?
